Step 1: What does TyG stand for?TyG is short for Tyglyceride-Glucose.It is a number that doctors use to check for Insulin Resistance. Insulin resistance means your body's cells are starting to ignore insulin, which can eventually lead to Type 2 diabetes.Step 2: The Two IngredientsTo find this index, you only need two numbers from a standard, fasting blood test:Fasting Glucose: The amount of sugar in your blood.Fasting Triglycerides: The amount of fat in your blood.Step 3: Why do we combine fat and sugar?In the past, doctors only looked at sugar (glucose) to find diabetes. However, science discovered that when your body starts becoming insulin resistant, your liver also starts pumping out extra fat (triglycerides).By looking at both fat and sugar together, the TyG index catches insulin resistance much earlier than a basic sugar test.Step 4: How the Math Works (Simply)You do not need to do this math in your head. A computer calculator usually does it for you using three actions:Multiply: Multiply your fasting sugar number by your fasting fat number.Logarithm (ln): Apply a math function called a "natural log" to shrink that massive number into a small, readable score.Divide: Divide that final result by 2.How to Read the ScoreBelow 4.5: Excellent. Your metabolism is healthy.4.5 to 4.7: Caution. Your body is starting to resist insulin.Above 4.8: High risk. Strong sign of insulin resistance.
