Definition
States of matter are the different forms in which matter exists. These forms depend on how closely the particles are packed, how freely they move, and whether the matter has a fixed shape or volume.

Matter exists mainly as solid, liquid, and gas.
Each state has different properties like shape and volume.
Particles move differently in each state.
Heat and temperature changes cause change of state.
Five points
1. Solid has a fixed shape and fixed volume.
2. Liquid has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container.
3. Gas has no fixed shape and no fixed volume.
4. Heating causes melting and evaporation.
5. Cooling causes condensation and freezing.
Examples
Solid: ice, book, pencil
Liquid: water, milk, oil
Gas: air, oxygen, steam
Why do we need states of matter
We need to learn about states of matter to understand how things around us change, such as ice melting into water, water boiling into steam, air filling balloons, and many daily activities like cooking, freezing, and breathing.
