Food chain
A food chain is a sequence that shows how food and energy pass from one living organism to another. It usually begins with the Sun, which provides energy for plants to make their own food. Plants are called producers because they make their own food. Animals that eat plants are called herbivores, while animals that eat other animals are called carnivores. For example, in the food chain Sun → grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → eagle, each organism gets energy by eating another organism. When plants and animals die, decomposers such as bacteria and fungi break them down and return nutrients to the soil. Food chains are important because they show how living things depend on one another for food and energy.
