CLASSIFICATION / TYPES OF INDUSTRIES
(i) Primary Industry
Concerned with the production of goods with the help of nature.
It is nature-oriented and requires little human effort.
Examples: Agriculture, farming, forestry, fishing, horticulture.
(ii) Genetic Industry
Engaged in reproduction and multiplication of plants and animals for sale.
The main aim is to earn profit from selling them.
Examples: Plant nurseries, cattle breeding, poultry farms, fish hatcheries.
(iii) Extractive Industry
Involves extraction of natural resources from the soil, air, or water.
Products are usually in raw form and used by other industries.
Examples: Mining (coal, iron ore), oil extraction, timber and rubber extraction.
(iv) Manufacturing Industry
Converts raw materials into finished goods using machines and manpower.
The products may be consumer goods or producer goods.
Examples: Textile, sugar, paper, chemical industries.
(v) Construction Industry
Engaged in building infrastructure like houses, bridges, roads, dams, canals, etc.
Different from others because goods are produced and used at the same place.
Examples: Building construction, road and dam projects.
(vi) Service Industry
Provides services instead of goods.
Plays a vital role in national development.
Examples: Hotel industry, tourism, entertainment, transport, banking.
