Why do we have different skin colour
People have different skin colors mainly because of melanin, a natural pigment made by special skin cells called melanocytes.
There are 2 chemicals named Glycene and GABA
What is melanin?
Melanin is a pigment that gives color to your:
Skin
Hair
Eyes
The more melanin your skin has, the darker it appears. The less melanin it has, the lighter it appears.
Why do people have different amounts of melanin?
Over thousands of years, humans adapted to different climates around the world.
Near the equator, where sunlight is very strong, people evolved darker skin with more melanin. Melanin helps protect the skin from the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Farther from the equator, where sunlight is weaker, people evolved lighter skin with less melanin. This helps the body make enough vitamin D from sunlight.
Is one skin color better than another?
All natural skin colors are healthy and normal. Skin color is simply a result of how much melanin a person's body produces and the environment their ancestors adapted to.
