Nutrients

Nutrients are substances in food that our body needs to live, grow, stay healthy, and get energy.

There are 6 main nutrients:

  1. Carbohydrates – The body's main source of energy.

    • Examples: Rice, bread, potatoes, pasta.

  2. Proteins – Help build and repair muscles, skin, and other body tissues.

    • Examples: Eggs, fish, beans, meat, milk.

  3. Fats – Provide stored energy, keep the body warm, and protect organs.

    • Examples: Butter, nuts, oils, avocado.

  4. Vitamins – Help the body work properly and keep us healthy.

    • Examples:

      • Vitamin A – Good for eyes.

      • Vitamin C – Helps healing and supports the immune system.

      • Vitamin D – Helps build strong bones.

  5. Minerals – Needed for strong bones, healthy blood, and many body functions.

    • Examples:

      • Calcium – Strong bones and teeth.

      • Iron – Helps blood carry oxygen.

      • Potassium – Helps muscles and nerves work.

  6. Water – Essential for every cell in the body. It helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, remove waste, and keep the body hydrated.

Why are nutrients important?

  • They give us energy.

  • They help us grow.

  • They repair damaged tissues.

  • They keep our organs working properly.

  • They help protect us from diseases.
