Shells 🐚

Shells are hard outer coverings made by some animals to protect their soft bodies. Animals such as snails, oysters, clams, turtles, and crabs have shells. Shells can be found in seas, rivers, forests, and gardens. They come in many beautiful shapes, colors, and sizes.

Most shells are made of a strong substance called calcium carbonate. Sea animals take minerals from seawater and slowly build their shells layer by layer as they grow. Crab shells are made of a tough material called chitin, while turtle shells contain bone and a hard material called keratin.

Shells are very important for animals. They protect them from enemies and harsh weather. Shells also help keep the body moist and safe. Some animals use shells to hide from predators. Hermit crabs do not make their own shells, so they use empty shells as portable homes.

There are many kinds of shells. Snail shells are spiral-shaped and easy to recognize. Oyster and clam shells have two halves that can open and close. Turtle shells are strong like armor and are attached to the turtle’s body.

People love collecting seashells from beaches because they are colorful and unique. Shells are also used in decorations, jewelry, and art. Scientists study shells to learn more about sea life and the environment.
