Sound
What Is Sound?
Sound is a form of energy that we hear with our ears. It is produced when an object vibrates. Vibrations are very fast back-and-forth movements. These vibrations create sound waves that travel through a medium such as air, water, or solids. When the sound waves reach our ears, our brain interprets them as sound.
Examples of sounds around us include talking, singing, barking dogs, and ringing bells.
How Does Sound Travel?
Sound travels in the form of waves. These waves need a medium to travel. A medium can be air, water, or a solid object. Sound cannot travel through empty space because there are no particles to carry the vibrations.
Sound travels at different speeds in different materials:
Fastest in solids.
Slower in liquids.
Slowest in gases.
