What is a super volcano?
A super volcano is an extremely large volcano that can produce a super-eruption. It is much bigger and more powerful than ordinary volcanoes.
Scientists usually call an eruption a super-eruption if it throws out more than 1,000 cubic kilometers of ash, rock, and magma. That is enough material to fill about 400 million Olympic-sized swimming pools!
Unlike many volcanoes, a supervolcano may not look like a tall mountain. Instead, it often has a huge bowl-shaped depression called a caldera.
How does a super volcano form?
Deep underground, hot magma collects in a giant magma chamber.
Over thousands or even millions of years, the chamber grows larger.
Pressure builds as more magma and gases collect.
Eventually, the ground above the chamber becomes too weak.
The roof collapses, causing a massive eruption.
After the eruption, the ground sinks, forming a large caldera.
Why are super volcanoes so powerful?
They have:
Huge magma chambers
Large amounts of dissolved gases
Pressure that builds up over a very long time
When the pressure is released, the explosion can be enormous.
Famous super volcanoes
1. Yellowstone Caldera
One of the world's best-known super volcanoes.
Located beneath Yellowstone National Park.
Has had three giant eruptions in the last 2.1 million years.
Today, it is closely monitored by scientists.
2. Campi Flegrei
Located near Naples.
Still active.
Scientists watch it carefully because the ground sometimes rises and falls.
3. Lake Toba
Formed by one of the largest eruptions in Earth's history about 74,000 years ago.
The eruption created the huge lake seen today.
What happens during a super-eruption?
A super-eruption can:
Blast huge amounts of ash into the sky.
Cover nearby areas with thick volcanic ash.
Produce fast-moving clouds of hot gas and ash called pyroclastic flows.
Change the climate because ash and sulfur gases block some sunlight.
Disrupt air travel since volcanic ash is dangerous for aircraft.
Damage crops and affect food supplies.
