Types of chemical reaction
The five main types of chemical reactions are synthesis (combination), decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, and combustion. In a synthesis reaction, two or more substances combine to form one new substance. In a decomposition reaction, one compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. In a single displacement reaction, a more reactive element replaces a less reactive element in a compound. In a double displacement reaction, the ions of two compounds exchange places to form two new compounds. In a combustion reaction, a substance reacts with oxygen and releases energy in the form of heat and light. These reactions occur in nature, in living organisms, and in many everyday activities such as cooking, burning fuel, rusting, and manufacturing products.
