Variation in species

Variation in Species

Variation in species means that individuals belonging to the same species are not identical. Even though they can reproduce with each other and are part of the same group they show many small and natural differences .These differences can be in height ,skin colour ,body shape, leaf size ,flower colour, speed ,behavior and many other features .All these differences together are known as variation.

What Variation Means?

Variation means that no two individuals of a species look or behave exactly the same . Some differences are easy to see like height or hair type Some differences are hidden like blood group or the way the body works inside.

So same species → many natural differences → variation

Examples of Variation in Humans

Humans show a lot of variation Some people are tall and some are short ,Some have straight hair and some have curly hair, Some have lighter skin and some have darker skin, Some run fast and some run slow.

These differences make each person unique even though we all belong to the same species.

Examples of Variation in Dogs

Dogs also show variation Some dogs are very big and some are very small, Some have long fur and some have short fur, Some have long ears and some have short ears ,Even dogs of the same breed can still have small differences .

Examples of Variation in Plants

Plants show variation too Some plants of the same species grow taller than others , Some have bigger leaves and some have smaller leaves, The colour of flowers can also vary a little even in the same type of plant.

Why Variation Happens

Variation happens for two main reasons

Genes

Parents pass their genes to their children Since every child receives a different mix of genes they will not look exactly the same This causes inherited variation

Environment

Things around the organism also cause variation Food sunlight water temperature and exercise can affect how an individual grows This causes environmental variation

So genes plus environment → variation within a species.

Why Variation is Important

Variation is important because it helps a species survive If the environment changes suddenly not all individuals will be affected in the same way Some may have features that help them survive better These individuals live longer and can reproduce which keeps the species safe and strong

So variation → better survival → stronger species over time.
