Definition:

A cell is the smallest living unit of life. All living things are made up of cells.


Parts of a Cell:

1. Cell Membrane.

The cell membrane is the outer covering of the cell. It protects the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell.

2. Cytoplasm.

Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance inside the cell. All the small parts of the cell float in it.

3. Nucleus.

The nucleus is called the “brain” of the cell. It controls all the activities of the cell.


Plant Cell and Animal Cell:

Plant Cell.

  • Has a cell wall.

  • Has chloroplasts.

  • Usually rectangular in shape.

Animal Cell.

  • Does not have a cell wall.

  • Does not have chloroplasts.

  • Usually round in shape.


Importance of Cells:

Cells help living things:

  • Grow.

  • Move.

  • Get energy.

  • Repair damaged parts.

  • Stay alive.
