What is classifying plants?
Grouping plants into different categories.
Why do we classify plants?
There are millions of plants so we need a way to organize them.
What are mosses?
Mosses are very small plants. They produce spores for reproduction.
What are ferns?
Ferns are very big and they have leaves called fronds. they reproduce spores on the back of their fronds.
What are conifers?
Confers can grow to be the size of a large tree. They have leaves called needles. They reproduce seeds. The seeds are produced in its cone.
How do we classify plants?
We look at features like:
Do they have flowers ?
Do they have seeds?
Are they small?
Simple groups of plants
Here are the basic groups.
Flowering plants.
Plants that make flowers
Example: Rose, mango, sunflower.
Non-flowering plants.
Plants that do not make flowers
Example: Ferns, mosses.
Seed plants.
• Gymnosperms - seeds but no flowers.
• Angiosperms - seeds and flowers.
Non-seed plants.
Example: Mosses, ferns.
