What are Rocks?
Rocks are natural solid materials that make up the Earth's crust. They are found everywhere on Earth, including mountains, hills, riverbeds, deserts, and under the oceans. Rocks are an important part of our planet because they help form landforms, provide minerals, and eventually break down to form soil.
Rocks are made up of one or more minerals. Some rocks contain only one mineral, while others contain several different minerals mixed together. The minerals present in a rock determine its colour, texture, hardness, and other properties.
Rocks are formed naturally over millions of years through different geological processes. They can be very hard, like granite, or relatively soft, like chalk. Some rocks are smooth, while others are rough or layered.
Types of Rocks
1. Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock (magma below the Earth's surface or lava on the surface) cools and solidifies.
Examples: Granite, basalt.
2. Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments such as sand, mud, shells, and small rock fragments are deposited in layers and compressed over long periods of time.
Examples: Sandstone, limestone.
3. Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed by intense heat and pressure deep inside the Earth.
Examples: Marble, slate.
Importance and Uses of Rocks
Rocks are very useful to humans. They are used for:
Building houses, roads, bridges, and dams.
Making statues, monuments, and decorative items.
Producing cement and other construction materials.
Providing valuable minerals and metals.
Forming soil when they break down through weathering.
Rocks also help scientists learn about the Earth's history because they contain information about past environments and geological events.

Most rocks sink in water, but a rock called pumice is full of tiny air bubbles formed when volcanic lava cools quickly. Because it contains so much trapped air, it can float on water
