Ecosystem:

An ecosystem is a system where living things and non-living things live together and depend on each other.


Living things:

These are things that are alive:

  • Plants.

  • Animals.

  • Humans.

  • Microorganisms.


Non-living things:

These are things that are not alive:

  • Air.

  • Water.

  • Soil.

  • Sunlight.


How an ecosystem works:

  1. Plants use sunlight to make food.

  2. Animals eat plants or other animals.

  3. Microorganisms break down dead things.

  4. Nutrients go back into the soil.

  5. The cycle repeats again and again.


Types of ecosystems:

Forest ecosystem

Has trees, birds, insects, deer, soil, and rain.

Pond ecosystem

Has fish, frogs, algae, water plants, and insects.

Desert ecosystem

Has cactus plants, camels, snakes, and very little water.

Ocean ecosystem

Has fish, whales, coral, seaweed, and salty water.


Importance of ecosystems:

  • Gives us food.

  • Gives oxygen.

  • Keeps nature balanced.

  • Provides homes for animals.

  • Helps clean air and water.
