Igneous rock
What is Igneous Rock?
Igneous rocks are rocks that are formed when melted rock cools and becomes solid.
How they are formed.
Deep inside Earth, rocks melt and become magma.
When magma comes out of a volcano, it is called lava.
When magma or lava cools, it hardens and forms igneous rock.
Why do crystals form in igneous rocks?
Crystals form because magma takes a lot of time to cool underground because it's surrounded by hot rocks, so over time crystals will form.
What is Magma?
Magma is hot, melted rock found deep inside the Earth.
Key points.
Found under the Earth’s surface.
Very hot.
Made of melted rock, minerals, and gases.
When magma comes out of a volcano, it is called lava.
How does magma cool?
Magma cools when it moves to a place with lower temperature. Inside the Earth, it is extremely hot, but when it rises closer to the surface, the temperature becomes cooler, so the magma starts to lose heat and becomes solid rock.
Fun Fact
Igneous rocks were the first type of rocks formed on Earth.
