gas exchange

Gas Exchange

Definition:

Gas exchange is the process by which oxygen enters the body and carbon dioxide leaves the body.

Key Points

  • Occurs mainly in the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs.

  • Oxygen moves from the air in the lungs into the blood.

  • Carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs.

  • Happens by diffusion (movement from high concentration to low concentration).

  • Blood carries oxygen to body cells and brings carbon dioxide back to the lungs.

Fun Fact

An average person breathes about 20,000 times a day, allowing gas exchange to happen continuously and keep the body supplied with oxygen.
