SPECIES

What is a Species?

A species is a group of living organisms that are similar to each other and can reproduce with one another.

Their offspring must also be able to grow up and reproduce.

Simple Meaning

If two living things can:

  • Mate

  • Have offspring (babies)

  • And those offspring can also reproduce

Then they belong to the same species.

Examples

  • Humans → Homo sapiens

  • Dogs → Canis familiaris

  • Cats → Felis catus

  • Lions → Panthera leo

Why it is important

Scientists use species to:

  • Classify living things

  • Study animals and plants easily

  • Understand how life is related and evolves

FUN FACT

Sometimes animals that look very different can still belong to the same species.
