1. Epidermis
The epidermis is the plant's outer covering.
Protects the plant from damage
Helps reduce water loss
In roots, it helps absorb water and minerals
In leaves, it contains stomata for gas exchange
2. Xylem
Xylem is a transport tissue.
Carries water and minerals
Mainly moves them from the roots upward to the stem and leaves
Also gives the plant some support
3. Phloem
Phloem is another transport tissue.
Carries sugars/food made by photosynthesis
Moves food from leaves to other parts of the plant
Can transport food up or down, depending on where it is needed
4. Meristematic tissue
These are regions containing cells that keep dividing.
They help the plant grow.
Main types:
Apical meristem — increases length/height
Lateral meristem — increases thickness
Intercalary meristem — helps certain plants grow from areas near nodes
5. Stomata
Stomata are tiny pores, usually found on leaves.
Allow carbon dioxide to enter
Allow oxygen to leave
Allow water vapour to leave
