States of matter

1. Solid

  • Has a fixed shape and fixed volume.

  • Particles are very close together.

  • Particles vibrate in place.

  • Examples: ice, stone, pencil.

2. Liquid

  • Has a fixed volume but no fixed shape.

  • Takes the shape of its container.

  • Particles are close together but can move around.

  • Examples: water, milk, oil.

3. Gas

  • Has no fixed shape or volume.

  • Fills the whole container.

  • Particles are far apart and move freely.

  • Examples: oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour.
