MARS - LHB

After the formation of the planets, the inner Solar System may have been subjected to the so-called Late Heavy Bombardment. About 60% of the surface of Mars shows a record of impacts from that era, whereas much of the remaining surface is probably underlain by immense impact basins caused by those events. There is proof of a huge crater in northern Mars, about 10,600 km by 8,500 km, nearly four times bigger than the Moon’s largest crater. Scientists think it formed 4 billion years ago when a Pluto-sized object hit Mars. This crash may have made the north smoother, creating the Borealis basin, which covers 40% of the planet.
