Definition

A species is the basic unit of classification. it refers to a group of organisms that are similar and can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.

• Members of the same species share similar characteristics.

• They have the same number of chromosomes.

• Reproduction occurs naturally within the species.

Genus

Definition

A genus is a group of closely related species that share common features.

Eg:

Genus Species Common Name:Panthera Panthera leo - Lion,Panthera tigris -Tiger,Panthera pardus - Leopard

All three belong to the same genus (Panthera) but are different species.

In binomial nomenclature,[the naming system of organisms]

• The first word = Genus (always capitalized)

• The second word = Species (lowercase)

Example: Homo sapiens → Homo = genus, sapiens = species
