Definition:
Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is.
Simple explanation:
When something is hot, its tiny particles move fast.
When something is cold, its particles move slowly.
Units of temperature:
Celsius (°C) – mostly used in daily life
Fahrenheit (°F)
Kelvin (K) – used in science
Examples:
Ice cream melts on a hot day
Water freezes in a freezer
Tea feels hot when we drink it
Snow is very cold
Our body temperature is about 37°C
A fever means our body temperature is high
Uses of temperature:
Temperature helps us choose our clothes. We wear cotton clothes in summer and woollen clothes in winter. Doctors use a thermometer to check our body temperature. Temperature also helps farmers grow crops in the right season.
Fun fact:
The coldest natural temperature ever measured on Earth was –89°C in Antarctica!
