Ozone Depletion

Ozone Depletion

Ozone depletion means the thinning of the ozone layer in the Earth’s atmosphere.

What is the ozone layer?

  • It is a protective layer of gas high up in the sky.

  • It protects us from harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays from the Sun.

What causes ozone depletion?

It is mainly caused by harmful chemicals, such as:

  • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) – found in old refrigerators, ACs, sprays

  • Halons – used in fire extinguishers

  • Pollution from industries

These chemicals go up into the air and destroy ozone molecules.

Why is ozone depletion dangerous?

  • More UV rays reach Earth

  • Can cause skin cancer

  • Harms plants and animals

  • Affects marine life

How can we reduce ozone depletion?

  • Use CFC-free products

  • Reduce pollution

  • Protect trees

  • Use eco-friendly appliances

Fun Fact

The ozone hole is largest over Antarctica!
