Definition:

Microorganisms are very small living organisms that can be seen only under a microscope.



Where are they found?

Microorganisms are found everywhere:

  • In air

  • In water

  • In soil

  • Inside our body

  • On food



Types of Microorganisms

  1. Bacteria

    • Single-celled

    • Found everywhere

    • Some are helpful, some cause diseases

  2. Viruses

    • Very tiny (smaller than bacteria)

    • Can live only inside living cells

    • Cause diseases like cold and flu

  3. Fungi

    • Examples: yeast, mould

    • Can be helpful or harmful

  4. Protozoa

    • Single-celled organisms

    • Found in water

    • Example: Amoeba

  5. Algae

    • Mostly found in water

    • Make their own food using sunlight



Useful Microorganisms

  • Help in making curd and bread 

  • Help in digestion

  • Used to make medicines and vaccines

  • Help plants grow by improving soil



Harmful Microorganisms

  • Cause diseases (cholera, typhoid, flu)

  • Spoil food

  • Cause infections
