The moon and its faces
Definition:
The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite. It moves around Earth and shines by reflecting sunlight.
Phases of the Moon:
The Moon looks different on different days — these shapes are called phases. There are 8 main phases:
New Moon – The Moon is not visible.
Waxing Crescent – A small curved light appears.
First Quarter – Half of the Moon is bright.
Waxing Gibbous – Almost full and growing.
Full Moon – The whole Moon is bright!
Waning Gibbous – It starts shrinking.
Last Quarter – Half is bright again.
Waning Crescent – Only a small curve of light left.
Then it goes back to New Moon again — and the cycle repeats every 29½ days!
Interesting Points:
The Moon has no light of its own — it reflects sunlight.
The Moon’s gravity causes tides in the oceans.
Astronauts first landed on the Moon in 1969 (Apollo 11 mission).
Fun Fact:
If you were on the Moon, your weight would be six times lighter than on Earth!
