Charactrastics of living organisms

Living organisms are things that have life. Humans, animals, plants, birds, insects, and microorganisms are all living organisms.

1. They Need Food

All living things need food to get energy.

  • Plants make their own food.

  • Animals depend on plants or other animals.

2. They Breathe (Respiration)

Living organisms breathe to get energy from food.

  • Humans and animals breathe through lungs.

  • Plants breathe through tiny holes in their leaves.

3. They Grow

Living things grow in size and age.

  • A baby grows into an adult.

  • A small plant grows into a big tree.

4. They Move

All living organisms show movement.

  • Animals move from place to place.

  • Plants move their parts (like bending toward sunlight).

5. They Respond to Stimuli

Living things respond to changes around them.

  • We feel hot or cold.

  • Plants close their leaves when touched.

6. They Reproduce

Living organisms can make new living organisms.

  • Animals give birth or lay eggs.

  • Plants grow from seeds.

7. They Excrete Waste

Living things remove waste materials from their bodies.

  • Humans sweat and urinate.

  • Plants remove waste through leaves.

8. They Have a Life Span

All living organisms are born, grow, become old, and die.

Fun Fact:

A sunflower turns toward the sun every day—this shows that plants can move and respond too!
