Physical quantities and measurement techniquesPhysical quantities and measurement techniques
Definition:
What are Physical Quantities?
Physical quantities are things that we can measure. They tell us how big, how long, how heavy, or how hot something is.
Examples of Physical Quantities:
Length – how long something is
Mass – how heavy something is
Time – how long something takes
Temperature – how hot or cold something is
A physical quantity has two parts:
A number
A unit
Example:
5 metres
2 kilograms
Measurement Techniques:
Measurement techniques are the ways we use tools to measure physical quantities.
Common Measuring Tools:
Ruler or measuring tape – used to measure length
Weighing scale – used to measure mass
Clock or stopwatch – used to measure time
Thermometer – used to measure temperature
Example:
We measure a pencil using a ruler
We measure milk using a measuring cup
We measure body temperature using a thermometer.
Fun Fact:
Without measurement, we cannot build houses, cook food, or do science experiments!
