Physical quantities and measurement techniquesPhysical quantities and measurement techniques

Definition:

What are Physical Quantities?

Physical quantities are things that we can measure. They tell us how big, how long, how heavy, or how hot something is.

Examples of Physical Quantities:

  • Length – how long something is

  • Mass – how heavy something is

  • Time – how long something takes

  • Temperature – how hot or cold something is

A physical quantity has two parts:

  1. A number

  2. A unit

Example:

  • 5 metres

  • 2 kilograms

Measurement Techniques:

Measurement techniques are the ways we use tools to measure physical quantities.

Common Measuring Tools:

  • Ruler or measuring tape – used to measure length

  • Weighing scale – used to measure mass

  • Clock or stopwatch – used to measure time

  • Thermometer – used to measure temperature

Example:

  • We measure a pencil using a ruler

  • We measure milk using a measuring cup

  • We measure body temperature using a thermometer.

Fun Fact:

Without measurement, we cannot build houses, cook food, or do science experiments!
