Food chains
A food chain shows how food and energy pass from one living thing to another in an ecosystem.
Main Details
Every food chain starts with the Sun.
Plants make their own food using sunlight and are called producers.
Animals that eat plants or other animals are called consumers.
Energy moves in one direction through the food chain.
Decomposers break down dead plants and animals and return nutrients to the soil.
Examples
Grass → Deer → Lion
Sun → Plant → Goat → Human
Leaves → Caterpillar → Bird

Plants are always at the first level.
Animals depend on plants directly or indirectly.
Each step is called a trophic level.
