  • Work faster and better

  • Improve skills of unskilled workers

  • Reduce supervision

  • Increase chances of promotion

  • Reduce accidents

Aims of Training

Training is done to:

  • Improve skills

  • Increase knowledge

  • Improve attitude (accept change, better customer service)

Types of Training

There are three types of training:

  1. Induction training

  2. On-the-job training

  3. Off-the-job training

1. Induction Training

Training given to new employees.

Advantages

  • Helps workers settle in quickly

  • Reduces mistakes

  • Improves health and safety

Disadvantages

  • Takes time

  • Wages are paid but no work is done

2. On-the-Job Training

Learning by working with experienced workers.

Advantages

  • Low cost

  • Training at the workplace

  • Some work is done while training

Disadvantages

  • Trainer may be less productive

  • Bad habits may be learned

  • No recognised qualifications

3. Off-the-Job Training

Training done away from the workplace (college, training centre).

Advantages

  • Many skills can be learned

  • Expert trainers teach

  • Workers become multi-skilled

Disadvantages

  • Expensive

  • Wages paid but no work done

  • Workers may leave for another job
