Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow said people are motivated in levels. You must satisfy the lower level first before the next level can motivate you.
1. Physiological Needs (Basic needs)
Food, water, shelter, rest.
In business → wages high enough to meet weekly bills.
If this isn’t satisfied, nothing else will motivate the worker.
2. Safety/Security Needs
Protection from danger and poverty.
In business → job security, fair treatment, safe working conditions.
Once secure, workers start caring about social needs.
3. Social Needs
Belonging, friendship, teamwork.
In business → supportive colleagues, team spirit.
After this, they want respect and recognition.
4. Esteem Needs
Respect, recognition, status.
In business → being praised for good work, higher status roles.
When this is achieved, workers start wanting personal growth.
5. Self-Actualisation (Top level)
Reaching your full potential, personal growth.
In business → more responsibility, promotion, challenging work.
This level motivates only when all lower needs are met.
