Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow said people are motivated in levels. You must satisfy the lower level first before the next level can motivate you.

1. Physiological Needs (Basic needs)

  • Food, water, shelter, rest.

  • In business → wages high enough to meet weekly bills.

If this isn’t satisfied, nothing else will motivate the worker.

2. Safety/Security Needs

  • Protection from danger and poverty.

  • In business → job security, fair treatment, safe working conditions.

Once secure, workers start caring about social needs.

3. Social Needs

  • Belonging, friendship, teamwork.

  • In business → supportive colleagues, team spirit.

After this, they want respect and recognition.

4. Esteem Needs

  • Respect, recognition, status.

  • In business → being praised for good work, higher status roles.

When this is achieved, workers start wanting personal growth.

5. Self-Actualisation (Top level)

  • Reaching your full potential, personal growth.

  • In business → more responsibility, promotion, challenging work.

This level motivates only when all lower needs are met.
