Variation means differences.So, variation in species means differences among living things of the same species.
What is a Species?
A species is a group of living things that are similar and can have babies together.Example: All humans are one species.

Why Does Variation Happen?
Variation happens because of:
Inheritance – traits we get from our parents
Environment – food, climate, sunlight, water, etc.

Helps living things survive
Helps them adapt to their environment
Makes life on Earth diverse and interesting
