The moon and its faces

Definition:

The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite. It moves around Earth and shines by reflecting sunlight.

Phases of the Moon:

The Moon looks different on different days — these shapes are called phases. There are 8 main phases:

  1. New Moon – The Moon is not visible.

  2. Waxing Crescent – A small curved light appears.

  3. First Quarter – Half of the Moon is bright.

  4. Waxing Gibbous – Almost full and growing.

  5. Full Moon – The whole Moon is bright!

  6. Waning Gibbous – It starts shrinking.

  7. Last Quarter – Half is bright again.

  8. Waning Crescent – Only a small curve of light left.

Then it goes back to New Moon again — and the cycle repeats every 29½ days!

Interesting Points:

  • The Moon has no light of its own — it reflects sunlight.

  • The Moon’s gravity causes tides in the oceans.

  • Astronauts first landed on the Moon in 1969 (Apollo 11 mission).

Fun Fact:

If you were on the Moon, your weight would be six times lighter than on Earth!
