Investigating variation

Investigating Variation

Variation means differences among living things of the same species. For example, all humans are the same species, but we don’t all look the same — we have different heights, hair colors, and eye colors.

Investigation of Variation

To investigate variation, scientists or students can collect data and compare characteristics.

Example investigation: Investigating height in your class

  1. Measure the height of all students in the class.

  2. Write the values in a table.

  3. Draw a bar graph or chart.

  4. Observe differences — some are tall, some short, some in between.

Types of Variation

  1. Inherited variation – passed from parents (e.g., eye color, hair type).

  2. Environmental variation – caused by surroundings

    Fun Fact :

No two people (except identical twins) have the exact same DNA? That’s why everyone is unique — even your fingerprints are one of a kind!
