What does “pattern of falling” mean in physics?

When something falls, like an apple from a tree or a ball from your hand, it doesn’t just drop randomly. It follows a certain pattern — a regular way that things fall. This is because of gravity, the force that pulls everything toward the ground.

1. Falling Straight Down (Free Fall)

If you drop something from your hand and let it fall straight down:

• It starts off slowly.

• Then it goes faster and faster as it falls.

• The longer it falls, the faster it moves.

This happens because gravity pulls on it all the time.

Example:

• After 1 second, it falls about 5 meters.

• After 2 seconds, it falls about 20 meters.

• After 3 seconds, about 45 meters.

The distance it falls increases quickly — that’s the pattern.

2. Falling in a Curve (Like When You Throw Something)

If you throw a ball forward, it doesn’t just move straight.

• It goes forward and it falls down at the same time.

This makes the ball move in a curved path, like a rainbow shape. That’s called a parabola.

This is another kind of falling pattern: forward and down at the same time.

3. Falling With Air Slowing It Down

When something light falls — like a feather or a piece of paper — it falls slowly. That’s because air pushes against it.

• It still falls, but not as fast.

• It might even float or spin while falling.

• It will stop speeding up after a while and fall at the same speed — this is called terminal velocity.

So, the pattern changes when air gets in the way.
