Osmosis is the passing of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane.
Water moves from high water concentration to low water concentration.
The membrane allows only small molecules like water to pass through, not larger molecules.
This process continues until the concentration of water is balanced on both sides.
In plants, roots absorb water from the soil by osmosis, which helps them stay firm and transport nutrients.
In animals, osmosis controls the water balance in cells. If too much water enters, cells can burst; if too much water leaves, they shrink.
example : a raisin placed in water, which swells as water enters it by osmosis.

Why does water move through a semi-permeable membrane instead of solute particles?
How would osmosis occur if both sides of the membrane have equal water concentrations but different solutes?
What would happen to a red blood cell placed in pure water? In a concentrated salt solution? Why?
How can osmosis be demonstrated using a potato or an egg?
Can you design a simple experiment to measure the rate of osmosis? What variables would you control?
