The scientific name of the okapi is Okapia johnstoni.
Genus: Okapia
Species: johnstoni
It was named after Sir Harry Johnston, the explorer who helped scientists learn about the okapi for the first time in the early 1900s.
The okapi is a rare and strange-looking animal that lives deep in the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has zebra-like stripes on its legs, a body shaped like a horse, and a face that’s similar to a giraffe. Even though it doesn’t have a long neck, the okapi is actually the closest living relative of the giraffe.
Okapis are herbivores. They eat leaves, fruits, buds, and other soft plants found in the forest. They have long, blue tongues that can reach up to 18 inches. Their tongue is so flexible they can use it to clean their own eyes and ears. This helps them stay clean, especially since they live in a muddy and rainy place.
They are very shy and quiet animals. Okapis usually live alone and are most active during the day. Their black and white striped legs help them blend into the shadows of the forest, which keeps them hidden from predators like leopards. They also have excellent hearing, which helps them sense danger early and stay safe.
One unusual thing about the okapi is that its skin gives off a black, oily liquid. This oil acts like a natural waterproof coat. It protects their fur from getting too wet in the rain and may help their bodies slide easily through wet bushes without getting scratched.
Okapis are endangered, which means their population in the wild is getting smaller. The biggest threat is deforestation. People are cutting down forests for wood, farming, and roads. As their home disappears, so does their food and safety. They’re also hunted illegally for their meat and skin, even though it’s against the law. In some places, armed groups move into the forest, making it too dangerous for wildlife protectors to help them.
Because okapis live in one small part of the world and are so quiet and well-hidden, many people don’t even know they exist. That’s why it’s important to learn about them and protect the forests they live in.
