1. Rainbows happen when sunlight passes through raindrops.
2. The light bends (refracts) when it enters the raindrop.
3. Then the light reflects off the inside of the drop.
4. The light bends again when it comes out.
5. This bending and bouncing splits the light.
6. White sunlight breaks into 7 colors.
7. These colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
8. Each color bends at a different angle.
9. We see the rainbow in the sky opposite the sun.
10. Rainbows need both sunlight and water in the air.
Why does a rainbow always appear opposite the sun?
Why can’t you ever reach the end of a rainbow?
Can rainbows appear at night (i.e., moonbows)?
Why do we usually see only part of a circle instead of the full circle of a rainbow?
